I just today noticed an illustration which was painted over a screencap from famous movie. This illustration got a Daily Deviation and it has over 3000 faves and positive comments from people.
I started to wonder that is this form of art acceptable these days?
I have seen this done before but I never thought that this form of art would get to DD, but obviously I was wrong.

I also have noticed that fan art from whatever fandom is on or from Disney princesses are a hot subject in the art circles. It's kind of sad that people's OC's don't get as much attention, no matter how well the image would be drawn. There are only few exceptions in that area, but those people are famous from the start so fans fave whatever they draw anyway. ( don't get me wrong, I am NOT bitter, just stating the facts out, and these artist deserve every fave because their artwork is awesome and inspiring.)

But the main point is that should we all start painting over screencaps from movie scenes to get attention?
The person who did this and got a DD never even said in her description that the painting is actually from a real movie scene and from a real sceencap which can be found from google search. It disturbs me and makes me kind of upset that she never said that she totally overpainted this picture and gave the credit like; here's the original picture (insert link here).

Gnh, I dunno. Maybe I'm just tired and cranky because it's monday today and I woke up 4am. oTL (like on every working day)

ETA:
Just to clarify that I see no harm in Fanart or people drawing it. What bothers me in some fan arts are that some people don't do it for fandom or that they like the series/movie/game but because they want attention. I'm starting to be slightly fed with Disney fan art which is only made for more pageviews and faves. I like Disney fan art, I really do, but it's starting to feel like people want more attention with it. But then again, who wouldn't want attention towards their own art?

ETA2:
Luckily the person who got the DD of the overdrawn image has now included a link to the original image in her description.

And I STILL like to make it clear that I am not mad, sad or bitter what I was talking about here. Please forget the whole fan art talk. I don't want to upset anyone over my own opinions. I've received many good comments and I thank you for that. I've understood many things about the whole fan art thing, and I rest my case about it. If you are interested to know what I think about it, you can read the latest comments and replies where you can read my opinion about fan art.

I'm late on this one, but I noticed this by myself very offten. I've seen many artist, who don't like to draw fanarts and because of this fact, they don't get this much attention as they should.

For me drawing over a photo ore reference picture is not art. I know that it also take to have great technic that it looks good, but for me making of illustrations and drawings is sth more than good technic... It is also a hard work - and the works should be done from A to Z by the artist himself. Drawing over other pictures is like someone did the hardest work for You - sketch and the composition.

I'm really, really late here, but I've read through your journal and comments, and I'd like to know - may I be noted the DD you're talking about? I don't think much about issues like this, as I'm not much of an artist, but seeing what you have to say has got me interested.

For what it's worth, I've been a huge fan of you and your work - namely your original characters - for years, and your drive is one of the key ingredients that still keeps me inspired.

(excuse the shabby pictureless account of mine, I only recently joined dA but haven't gotten anything done..)

Personally, I don't have any people I watch for their fanart. Style is more interesting to me (after all, it's why I watch you), but I agree that fanart is a pretty effective way to get attention. dA is a pretty big community, some people are willing to "market" themselves towards what's popular to draw just to get some notoriety. I would think this especially true if they wanted to do commissions, but I can't be certain. If that is their reason, you can hardly say it's wrong to choose popular subject matter for your art to attract clients. Though, some people hide their lack of skills behind those popular subjects, which does frustrate me.

Style is important for me as well. I've seen many very well done fan arts which have caught my attention, and I think that many artist here deserve the attention they get. However, my point is that when an artist draws fan art just to seek attention and not putting any real effort or heart in his or her's art, that saddens me. But I understand it. The community is rather big and it's hard to get attention in this big place, so I kind of understand it why people try to do everything to get the attention they want. But I would love it if people would draw for themselves and not for the fans. When you draw for yourself and draw whatever you like and not something that is popular, then you achieve something much more than trying to just seek for attention. This is how I see it. ( though I'm terrible trying to make my point out in english oTL)

No, I think your point is clear. =] I enjoy drawing things I like more than things that are popular, which is why my gallery isn't very active.

I always prefer seeing OCs to seeing yet more fanart, though I do still appreciate well-drawn fanart. It just isn't as interesting of a peek into the artist's own talent if they're drawing somebody else's design, unless they're truly putting their own flair to it.

Same here. I have faved fan arts several times because it's well made and has other features that I like. I just wrote down (poorly)my point to a comment for AestheticRift, saying that I appreciate artist who draw for themselves and who like to draw whatever they like, and not draw for the fandoms and attention. The image will lack of real effort and heart what every artist puts in their work.

I don't know, if it's beautifully done and not obvious i wouldn't be surprised... Still, it's a pretty despicable technique.

There's a lot of difference between referencing something and out right tracing it. Just taking a screen cap and painting over it, is just theft, unless they are drastically changing it from the original (which would then make it a reference.) Don't pay attention to the people that claim it's ok to claim it as their own, because it's not, it's just art theft.

I know the DD you're talking about, and if you get a large rez version of that (flip it) and superpose it over her's it's obviously not a painting over. There's a few filters on it and touch ups here and there, but the detail such as pours in the hand are exactly the same as the photo. It's just theft, she's trying to make money off of by selling it as a popular character print.
